Let’s read about mindfulness, self-esteem and intentional living in this fast-paced world!

Welcome to a new (and hopefully) recurring feature of the Courage in Action blog: Book Club!  This space will share reflections, quotes, and big ideas from books, both newly published and older; mainstream and controversial; popular and unknown.  I hope to incorporate the books that I’m reading as well as those that impacted clients, are recommended by others and books that seem relevant to the key topics of this counseling practice: empowerment, growth, mindful presence, compassion, dialectics/open-mindedness, justice and intentionality

Here is a confession: I love books.  I love reading them; buying them; holding them; shelving them; looking at them… everything to do with them!  However, I have more than I could possibly read and I just keep finding more that I want to read.  I keep a wish-list and tell myself I won’t buy more, then I see something I just have to get and read next, lest I forget it.  My hope is to share these interesting books with others while also holding myself accountable to start digging into some of the books I already have!

So what kinds of books are we talking about?  Well, I’ve already mentioned books in many other posts either as references at the bottom of the post or incorporated into the writing itself.  I also have a previous post written about Brene Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are.  Anything goes if it’s challenging to one-self and a lesson can be derived from it. Likely, these books will ask and answer some questions: How do you deal with anxiety in relationships? What’s the best way to cope with depression? How do you improve your self-esteem? What’s the connection between trauma and addiction?

Not a reader? No problem! Maybe these posts will help you get the main points of the books with less time involved! More posts to come, but in the mean time here are a few upcoming titles:

  • Self-Compassion: the Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself. Author: Kristin Neff

  • Wherever You Go There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life.  Author: Jon Kabat-Zinn

  • Between the World and Me.  Author: Ta-Nehisi Coates.

  • Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol.  Author: Holly Whitaker

  • The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma.  Author: Bessel van der Kolk
